OTTAWA – The first six cases of a mysterious new flu were confirmed in Canada yesterday as the United States moved to declare a national health emergency.
While the six reported cases in Canada and the 20 cases reported in the U.S. of what has been dubbed swine flu were considered mild, authorities are concerned we could be seeing the beginning of something that could get much worse.
The Obama administration was “all hands on deck” today in response to the quickly escalating swine flu outbreak, with the declaration of a public health emergency and the release of the national antiflu drug stockpile.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano declared a national public health emergency, with swine flu now confirmed in at least 20 cases in five states. However, she said, the outbreak has not yet threatened to reach the lethal level it has in Mexico.
The Obama administration says it wants the owner of a Central California medical marijuana dispensary to be sentenced to at least five years in prison, despite his assertion that he was following state law.
Responding to federal judge’s query about the case of Charles Lynch, former operator of Central Coast Compassionate Caregivers in Morro Bay (San Luis Obispo County), a Justice Department official said Lynch’s prosecution and conviction were “entirely consistent with the policies of (the department) and with public statements made by the attorney general,” Eric Holder.
Holder, citing President Obama’s campaign pledge to respect medical marijuana laws in California and 12 other states, told reporters March 18 that federal agents would arrest only those who violated both state and federal law.
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper is considering an appeal to a federal court ruling that ordered him to fight for the repatriation of Omar Khadr from Guantanamo Bay.
The sternly-worded ruling from Justice James O’Reilly said Khadr’s constitutional rights have been violated and that the government must request his return home “as soon as practicable.”
WASHINGTON (CNN) — A post-9/11 law that sets federal standards for state driver’s licenses and identification cards is under fire from the head of the agency enforcing that law, the Department of Homeland Security.
President Obama, who supported the handgun ban in Washington, D.C.,
before it was tossed by the Supreme Court, since his election has
watched various proposals to ban “assault” weapons, require handgun
owners to submit to mental health evaluations, and sparked a rush on
ammunition purchases that caused some retailers to name him their
salesman of the year. Now he apparently is going after those to reload
their ammunition.
It was during an official visit earlier this
month to Mexico that he affirmed his support for a proposed
international treaty that addresses “firearms trafficking.”
Some research has suggested that consumption of high-fructose corn syrup, used as a sweetener in a wide variety of foods, may increase the risk of obesity and heart disease. Now, a controlled and randomized study has found that drinks sweetened with fructose led to higher blood levels of L.D.L, or “bad” cholesterol, and triglycerides in overweight test subjects, while drinks sweetened with another sugar, glucose, did not. Both L.D.L. and triglycerides have been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
WASHINGTON – The US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Frederick, Md., is under investigation by the Army’s Criminal Investigation Command for the possible disappearance of some of its stock of deadly pathogens, an Army spokesman said.
The Frederick News-Post reported yesterday that since at least February, agents have been trying to discover what happened to pathogens that may have gone missing from 1987 to 2008. The investigation coincides with the suspension of most research at the Army lab in February as authorities attempt to find errors in an inventory of their biological materials.

You have most likely broken the law. As you sit there right now, reading this, you are probably doing or have done something recently that has transgressed some statute, some rule of government. You haven’t done anything to harm another, you haven’t stolen or damaged the property of another, and yet it is likely that those who rule over you have written some words down on a piece of paper somewhere, called it a law, and now they expect you to know this and obey its dictates. The absurdity of this system is clear for all to see, and yet you are at the mercy of those who call themselves “servants” of the people but then act as if they are the masters.
