Should illegal filesharers have their broadband connection taken away?
Stephen Timms, the minister for Digital Britain has said previous proposals considered by the Government to simply restrict the internet connection speed of persistent offenders did not go far enough.
But is this a step too far? Currently seven million people – one in 12 of the population – regularly download music and films illicitly, while more than 60 per cent of people aged 14 to 24 have downloaded illegally, according to a report by UK Music.
Netanyahu greeted by angry protestors in London
British police have heightened security outside the premiers’ office as hundreds of demonstrators protested the Israeli prime minister’s visit to the country.
Hundreds of people attended the demonstration on Tuesday to protest the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands as UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown held a meeting with his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu in London.
The rally began about 30 minutes prior to Netanyahu’s arrival at Brown’s office on Tuesday, Ynet reported.
The demonstrators were protesting ‘the occupation,’ waving Palestinian flags, and signs reading ‘Stop the siege on Gaza,’ ‘Free Palestine,’ and ‘Stop Israel detonators’ and hollered slogans like “Netanyahu’s a war criminal.”
US ‘tent city’ dwellers face eviction – 24 Aug 09
High unemployment rates have forced many people in the US to move out of their homes. Some people have set up makeshift homes, using tents as a last resort.
One such community in Rhode Island is being run like a small town, with a committee that votes on how the camp is run. But now the state is trying to evict them.
Cath Turner reports.

Wichita Teen Suffering After Gardasil Vaccine
Cervical cancer runs in the family, so Wichita teen Gabi Swank asked her mom for the vaccine Gardasil. Swank says the series of shots ruined the life she knew.
This week, new research shows 12,424 girls have had adverse effects to the vaccine. Of that, 772 or 6.2% were considered serious like Swanks.
The kitchen table at Swank’s house is covered with pill bottles. The teen takes 15 prescriptions a day to treat her autoimmune disease lupus. “I get nauseated, I take all of them in the morning and most at night,” Swank said. It wasn’t always like this for the 16-year-old. “After my third shot, that’s when I collapsed and started having chest pains. Dramatically everything changed,” she said.
That was last year after taking the Gardasil vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. “I wanted to protect her, I didn’t want to potentially kill her,” said her mom Shannon Schrag. But Swank is now fighting for her life and spends a lot of time in the hospital. “This should not be happening to me, this should not be happening to anyone else.,” Swank said.
Her neurologist Dr. Dwight Lindholm blames the vaccine for her potentially fatal condition. “I recommend not getting a vaccination. It’s not worth the risk,” said Dr. Lindholm. His opinion is only stronger after seeing that 6.2% have had serious adverse effects. “That’s a serious high percent, a high risk,” he said.
It’s a risk Swank wouldn’t have taken if the research was available earlier. “You used our children as guinea pigs,” Schrag said.
Uncle Sam wants your house
That is not all he wants. He also wants you condo, your business, your money and your freedom. The real estate scam that we are living thru is the biggest ever attempted. Even if we don’t know for sure who the architects are, the collaborators have been our politicians who went along for power and the executioners were those in the banking system who help sell the wealth of the American public while enriching themselves with exorbitant bonuses. We are losing our land without a single shot being fired, at least for now as recent clashes between our citizens and politicians show that the American people’s patience is running thin.
The Real Estate confiscation plan has taken three decades to mature for it may have begun during the Jimmy Carter era with the Community Reinvestment Act. Lowering the lending standards and creating the sub-prime lending infected our economy and that of the entire world. More recently, we are being distracted of this real epidemic with the hype of a fabricated Swine Flu pandemic that has killed a hand full people around the world, most of which already had health issues. So far fortunately this farce has been rejected for it is only a distraction from the foreclosure epidemic that is tanking place in our country.
Obama administration uses Blackwater in drone killings
According to a recent report by the New York Times, the Obama administration has retained the services of the notorious Blackwater guards to carry out drone attacks in Afghanistan, denoting no substantive distinction from the Bush administration’s use of Blackwater – now operating under the banner of Xe Services LLC – to carry out ’targeted assassinations’ in Iraq. With the number of military contractors in Afghanistan far exceeding the U.S. soldiers on the ground [1], what has so far been revealed regarding Washington’s pacts with Blackwater and its more than a dozen affiliate companies might be only the beginning.
Swine flu: People with mild symptoms ‘need not be given Tamiflu’
Most people will make a full recovery in a week without the drug, according to the WHO.
The advice appears to contradict the approach taken by the National Pandemic Flu Service to give the drug to all those complaining of flu-like illnesses, regardless of the severity of their condition.
However, the WHO does recommend that patients whose symptoms are severe or whose condition starts to deteriorate should receive the anti-viral drugs.
The medication should also be given as soon as possible to children and adults with underlying health problems and pregnant women.
Tens of thousands of courses of Tamiflu, also called oseltamivir, have been given out to patients complaining of the flu, 135,000 in the last two weeks alone.
The drugs can cause side effects, including vomiting and nightmares in children.
Artificial life will be created ‘within months’ as genome experts claim vital breakthrough
Scientists are only months away from creating artificial life, it was claimed yesterday.
Dr Craig Venter – one of the world’s most famous and controversial biologists – said his U.S. researchers have overcome one of the last big hurdles to making a synthetic organism.
The first artificial lifeform is likely to be a simple man-made bacterium that proves that the technology can work.
But it will be followed by more complex bacteria that turn coal into cleaner natural gas, or algae that can soak up carbon dioxide and convert it into fuels.
They could also be used to create new vaccines and antibiotics.
