Ottawa a terrorist target

OTTAWA — Ottawa was one potential target of an alleged terrorist bombing plot involving at least three Muslim men in an al-Qaida-linked cell that was just months away from carrying out attacks, police said Thursday.

At the same time, money was being raised locally to fund attacks against Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan, police revealed at a press conference.

“This group posed a real and serious threat to citizens of the National Capital Region and Canada’s national security,” said RCMP Chief Supt. Serge Therriault. “Our criminal investigation and arrests prevented the assembly of any bombs and the terrorist attacks from being carried out.”

A group of activists calling themselves Fort Hood Disobeys recently tried to block the deployment of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment to Iraq from Fort Hood. The activists were labeled anti war protestors by another media outlet, which is okay by me. It’s about time we got some action on the anti war protesting front. It’s about time real people started to once again voice their concern in a more pertinent way than simply begging politicians, who obviously couldn’t care less, to end these expensive and deadly occupations. One can only hope that this example of civil disobedience is followed up by more incidents and greater disobedience from those who were so boisterous when George Bush was in office but have remained so silent since Barack Obama became president. Assange arrest warrant ‘no mistake’

Assange, who has been criticised for leaking controversial documents on the US-led war in Afghanistan, told Al Jazeera that the accusations are part of a “smear campaign”.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Karin Rosander, from Sweden’s prosecution authority, affirmed that no errors had been made in launching the charges against Assange.

The gay marriage debate is playing out in California. There, the majority of people have spoken. They don’t believe that gay people should be allowed to be married. They think that marriage should be defined as one man and one woman. They think that the state should not be allowed to sanction any other kind of union. I think this is a great example of why our founding fathers had such disdain for democracy. This is a great example of how the democratic process can lead to tyranny or mob rule. This is a great example of the difference between a republic and a democracy, why our founders decided to make this nation a republic, and why even republics fail miserably when it comes to representing the masses. Republicans Should Embrace an Anti War Philosophy

I heard a great idea the other day. It was proffered by Stefan Molyneux. We should hold a referendum and find out who favors wars of aggression and foreign occupation and who doesn’t. Those in favor of such things should have to pay for them. Those against said wars should receive a tax refund for the portion of their taxes that would have gone to fund such foreign adventurism. I have the feeling that if this were the case those funding said projects would quickly discover just how expensive wars are and how much it costs to maintain an empire. I think they would quickly learn that such adventurism is simply not worth the price. READ MORE »

Desecration protest in Jerusalem

Dozens of demonstrators in West Jerusalem have protested against the demolition of tombstones in the city’s historic Muslim cemetery.

The protesters say hundreds of graves were desecrated. But city officials say they simply did away with fake tombstones, placed there to deter developers.

Prison Farms Close as Get-Tough Crime Initiative Moves Ahead

The battle may be lost, but the war is not over as far as Dianne Dowling is concerned.

About 18 months ago, Dowling and the group Save Our Prison Farms embarked on a national campaign to keep Canada’s six prison farms from being phased out.

That campaign, which was backed by writer Margaret Atwood, culminated with two days of major protests at Frontenac Institution in Kingston, Ontario, when hundreds of demonstrators showed up to protest the removal of 300 cattle from the century-old prison farm.

A peaceful blockade by protesters prevented cattle trucks from entering the institution on Sunday, Aug. 8. But after 24 arrests and a massive police presence, the cattle were successfully shipped out the following day and sent for auction.

Aside from an abattoir at Pittsburgh Institution in Kingston which will continue operating, Canada’s prison farms are now all but closed. The government said the farms were losing $4 million annually, and plans to replace them with programs it says are more effective.
