A Claim of Pro-Islam Bias in Textbooks

HOUSTON — Some conservative members of the Texas Board of Education assert that the history books used in this state have a pro-Islamic bias, and they are upset about it.

Never shy about wading into the culture wars, they are planning to vote Friday for a resolution that would send a blunt message to textbook publishers: Do not present a pro-Islamic, anti-Christian version of history if you want to sell books in one of the nation’s largest markets.

“The purpose of this resolution is to ensure there is balanced treatment of divergent groups,” Gail Lowe, the chairwoman of the board, said. “In the past, the textbooks have had some bias against Christianity.”

Obama: Don’t let skeptics, fear derail Mideast peace

Washington (CNN) — President Obama says critics and skeptics of a Mideast peace between Israelis and Palestinians should “consider the alternative,” according to excerpts released in advance of his United Nations speech planned for Thursday.

“If an agreement is not reached, Palestinians will never know the pride and dignity that comes with their own state. Israelis will never know the certainty and security that comes with sovereign and stable neighbors who are committed to co-existence,” he said. “The hard realities of demography will take hold. More blood will be shed.

“This Holy Land will remain a symbol of our differences, instead of our common humanity,” he said.

According to his prepared text, Obama said although peace must be made by Israelis and Palestinians, other countries have a responsibility as well.

“Those of us who are friends of Israel must understand that true security for the Jewish state requires an independent Palestine — one that allows the Palestinian people to live with dignity and opportunity,” Obama said. “And those of us who are friends of the Palestinians must understand that the rights of the Palestinian people will be won only through peaceful means — including genuine reconciliation with a secure Israel.”

Huffington Post is among ‘news parasites’, says Washington Post man

Leonard Downie Jr, the former executive editor of the Washington Post, has attacked online news aggregators including the Huffington Post as “parasites living off journalism produced by others”.

Delivering the James Cameron Memorial Lecture at London’s City University last night, Downie criticised online aggregators for filling their websites “with news, opinion, features, photographs and video that they continuously collect – some would say steal – from other national and local news sites”.

The Huffington Post was founded in 2005 by socialite and columnist Arianna Huffington and earlier this year overtook the New York Times website in terms of traffic.

But Downie questioned how the blogging and aggregation site got this traffic. “Revealing photos of and stories about entertainment celebrities account for much of the highly touted web traffic to the Huffington Post… Though they purport to be a new form of journalism, these aggregators are primarily parasites living off journalism produced by others,” said Downie, who edited the Washington Post for 17 years until 2008 and is now the paper’s vice-president at large.

From start, Bush team focused on war with Iraq: documents

Former president George W. Bush’s advisers focused on toppling Saddam Hussein’s regime as soon as he took office and discussed how to justify a war in Iraq shortly after invading Afghanistan in 2001, official documents showed Wednesday.

A few hours after the September 11 attacks in 2001, then defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld spoke of attacking Iraq as well as Osama bin Laden, according to notes of a meeting on that day, newly declassified papers show.

Rumsfeld told a Pentagon lawyer to go to his deputy to get “support” showing a supposed link between the Iraqi regime and Al-Qaeda’s founder, according to the papers posted by the Washington-based National Security Archive, an independent research institute.

The US government has since acknowledged that Saddam’s regime had no role in the 9/11 attacks.

LONDON – The Titanic hit an iceberg in 1912 because of a basic steering error, and only sank as fast as it did because an official persuaded the captain to continue sailing, an author said in an interview published on Wednesday.

Louise Patten, a writer and granddaughter of Titanic second officer Charles Lightoller, said the truth about what happened nearly 100 years ago had been hidden for fear of tarnishing the reputation of her grandfather, who later became a war hero.

Lightoller, the most senior officer to have survived the disaster, covered up the error in two inquiries on both sides of the Atlantic because he was worried it would bankrupt the ill-fated liner’s owners and put his colleagues out of a job.

“They could easily have avoided the iceberg if it wasn’t for the blunder,” Patten told the Daily Telegraph.

“Instead of steering Titanic safely round to the left of the iceberg, once it had been spotted dead ahead, the steersman, Robert Hitchins, had panicked and turned it the wrong way.”

So, I heard part of Barack Obama’s speech yesterday. He held some sort of televised “town hall meeting” on CNBC which was entitled “Investing in America Forum.” This on the heels of the declaration by The National Bureau of Economic Research that the “recession” ended in June of 2009. I definitely didn’t get that memo. Well, one thing I can say for sure, these guys don’t give up on the rhetoric. They don’t lighten up on the propaganda. ‘Spiked’ apples left in horse field

Police are investigating after apples “spiked” with pins, screws and nails were left in a field full of horses.At least 15 apples are thought to have been planted in the field off Whiteway Lane, Rottingdean, East Sussex, with dressmaker pins and screws up to two inches long poking out of them.

Some of the fruit had already been half-eaten by the animals when they were discovered on Saturday morning.

Their owners now face an anxious wait to see if any of the horses have been harmed, as it could take more than 48 hours before it is known if any of the nine horses in the field have internal injuries.

Sarah Williams, who owns five of the horses kept at Rottingdean Riding Stables, described the incident as “sick”.

She told the Daily Mail: “I despair that anybody would want to do this to innocent animals.
