Megaupload users face data deletion US prosecutors warn

US prosecutors have said that data belonging to Megaupload users and stored by third parties could be deleted as soon as Thursday.

Users have been unable to access data since the file-sharing service was raided.

The warning was made in a letter filed by the US Attorney’s Office, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Megaupload’s lawyer Ira Rothken told the agency that at least 50 million users had data which could be deleted.

Mr Rothken said that freezing of Megaupload’s funds meant it was unable to pay those who were storing its data.

Six hundred million gamers could be war criminals, Red Cross says

THE Red Cross is investigating whether 600 million gamers are violating the Hague and Geneva conventions when they kill and blow stuff up for fun.

Delegates at the 31st International Conference of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Red Crescent raised the concerns over the potential “International Humanitarian Law” violations – which can constitute war crimes – during a workshop in Geneva.

‘Hackers’ cut Palestinian phone and internet systems

The main phone network in the West Bank and Gaza has suffered a sustained attack by computer hackers, the Palestinian Authority (PA) says.

It says most of the Palestinian territory has lost internet service.

PA spokesman Ghassan Ghattib said the attacks started in the morning and came from multiple sources around the world.

He said he did not know if the hacking was linked to the Palestinian leadership’s successful bid to get membership of Unesco on Monday.

School removes Wi-Fi over health concerns

OTTAWA – An Ontario private school has removed its wireless Internet system due to potential health concerns associated to it.

Pretty River Academy, located north of Toronto in Collingwood, is a private kindergarten to Grade 12 school with just under 150 students. Officials have switched to a hard-wire Internet system.

In May, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer reclassified radio frequency emitted by wireless devices as possibly carcinogenic.

The school’s principal Roberta Murray Hirst said the new system was fairly effortless to install and the school wanted to choose the safest Internet option.

Dr. Magda Havas, who studies environmental contaminants at Trent University, hopes other schools will move towards this model.

“This is a much better way of connecting kids to the Internet, it’s not nearly as dangerous as wireless,” Havas said.

SETI alien hunters re-open search for volunteer coders

The project hunting for intelligent life elsewhere in the universe is continuing its recruitment of citizen scientists despite the loss of one its key architects.

The SETI Institute is starting work to make terabytes of data trawled using its radio telescopes available to members for the public for analysis.

SETI is creating a “citizen science platform” building on setiQuest Explorer. Group research director Jill Tarter told The Reg that the project will lead to real-time participation in the group’s search for ET.

Tarter told us: “We hope by next March that we will have a new one [project] that will allow volunteers to help us explore regions of the spectrum that are crowded with signals.”

Harper vowed to make this a reality within the first 100 days of his current reign and if he is successful this would be detrimental to the fundamental privacy rights that we currently have. Voice your concerns with your local representatives (especially if they are conservative MP’s) and we can put a stop to this very unlawful “lawful access” bill.

California bill would ban cellphone use while bicycling

California’s Legislature this week sent to Gov. Jerry Browna bill that stiffens penalities for talking or texting on a cellphone without a hands-free device while behind the wheel of a motor vehicles.

For the first time, the bill would extend the state’s 3-year-old cellphone ban to bicyclists, though with lesser penalties than motorists face.

Bicycle groups aren’t fighting the ban and say something similar is probably in the future for bicyclists in other states.

Andy Clarke, president of the League of American Bicyclists, the cyclists’ lobby in Washington, says talking on cellphones while moving is a bad idea, whether on four wheels or two.

“We can and should be held to the same standard as people driving cars,” Clarke says. “One needs to be paying attention, both hands on the handlebars.”

Slip-Up in Chinese Military TV Show Reveals More Than Intended

A standard, even boring, piece of Chinese military propaganda screened in mid-July included what must have been an unintended but nevertheless damaging revelation: shots from a computer screen showing a Chinese military university is engaged in cyberwarfare against entities in the United States.

The documentary itself was otherwise meant as praise to the wisdom and judgment of Chinese military strategists, and a typical condemnation of the United States as an implacable aggressor in the cyber-realm. But the fleeting shots of an apparent China-based cyber-attack somehow made their way into the final cut.

The screenshots appear as B-roll footage in the documentary for six seconds—between 11:04 and 11:10 minutes—showing custom-built Chinese software apparently launching a cyber-attack against the main website of the Falun Gong spiritual practice, by using a compromised IP address belonging to a United States university. As of Aug. 22 at 1:30pm EDT, in addition to Youtube, the whole documentary is available on the CCTV website.

The screenshots show the name of the software and the Chinese university that built it, the Electrical Engineering University of China’s People’s Liberation Army—direct evidence that the PLA is involved in coding cyber-attack software directed against a Chinese dissident group.

The software window says “Choose Attack Target.” The computer operator selects an IP address from a list—it happens to be 138.26.72.17—and then selects a target. Encoded in the software are the words “Falun Gong website list,” showing that attacking Falun Gong websites was built into the software.

A drop-down list of dozens of Falun Gong websites appears. The computer operator chooses Minghui.org, the main website of the Falun Gong spiritual practice.

The IP address 138.26.72.17 belongs to the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB), according to an online trace.

The shots then show a big “Attack” button on the bottom left being pushed, before the camera cuts away.
